THE EXTRA CHAIR

Every November, we set an extra chair.

Not because someone is missing.

Because someone belongs.

There's space for you here.

THE TRADITION

WHY WE SET THE CHAIR

The Extra Chair is Bracket the Silence's November tradition — a simple invitation to make space for connection, remembrance, and belonging.

Set one for someone you miss. Someone who feels far away. Someone who could use an invitation. Someone whose place you still carry. Or even for yourself.

No explanation is required. The chair can hold a memory, an invitation, a hope, or simply a place that says: you belong here.

It's about noticing who isn't at the table — and choosing to hold space for them anyway.

SET THE CHAIR

Choose someone to honor, remember, welcome, or hold close.

It might be:

  • Someone you love
  • Someone you miss
  • Someone whose place you still carry
  • Someone who feels far away
  • Someone who could use an invitation
  • Someone you have not met yet

Then set a chair.

At your table.

In your room.

On your porch.

Beside you.

Place a name on it. Add a photograph, a note, or something that reminds you of them. Invite someone to sit in it. Or leave it open.

It does not have to be elaborate.

It does not have to be photographed.

It does not have to be shared.

Setting it is enough.

OPENING NOVEMBER 1

The table opens November 1. Until then, the chairs from previous years are still here.

A MEMORY

Set a chair for someone who is no longer physically here. Say their name. Tell one of their stories. Let their place still belong to them.

AN INVITATION

Set a chair for someone who may need one. Send the text. Make the call. Invite them into the room, the conversation, or the ordinary parts of your life.

AN OPEN PLACE

Set a chair without knowing who it is for yet. Let it remind you to notice who is standing outside the circle — and that no one should have to earn their place before they are welcomed in.

The chair may mean something different in every home. The belonging underneath it is the same.

THE CHAIRS WE SET

Every chair holds a person, a memory, an invitation, or the hope that someone will feel less alone.

Together, they become one long table — with room to keep growing.

LET THE CHAIR LEAVE THE PAGE

The Extra Chair does not end when you submit a photo or close this page.

If your chair is for someone living, consider sending the invitation. Ask them to dinner. Save them a seat. Call them. Check in. Tell them there is room for them in your life.

If your chair is for someone you miss, speak their name. Share the story that always makes you laugh. Let someone else know why their place still matters.

And if the chair is for you, sit down.

You do not have to earn your place here either.

If you'd like one

A small card to keep

Nothing to earn and nothing to prove — just a quiet square you can save or print.

THERE'S ALWAYS ROOM FOR ONE MORE

Maybe the chair is for someone you miss.

Maybe it is for someone you have been meaning to reach.

Maybe it is for someone you have not met yet.

Maybe it is for you.

The chair is the connection. Belonging is the point.
